‘Welcome Spring!’ show opens at Gleason Fine Art
Gleason Fine Art opens a new show, “Welcome Spring! Paintings by Jessica Ives, Heidi Daub, Karen Tusinski, and Jacob Cooley,” Thursday, May 15. The show runs through June 18, with a First Friday reception from 3 to 5 p.m. on June 6.
For her first show at the gallery, Damariscotta artist Jessica (née Stammen) Ives offers an exciting selection of her brushy oils, many featuring figures in pursuit of outdoor sports such as rock climbing, fly fishing, and swimming. The recently married Ives, an avid sportswoman herself, began 2014 with a move to Damariscotta with her new husband, followed by a highly successful show at Bowdoin College.
Karen Tusinski’s exuberant oils of poppies and tulips proclaim the end of winter and the beginning of spring in no uncertain terms. Tusinski’s red, white, and yellow flowers angle sinuously across the canvas and spill out of pots, threatening to leave the canvas entirely.
At the opposite end of the emotional spectrum, Jacob Cooley’s delicate paintings of marshes sooth us with subtle green, yellow, and peach tones. While a Tusinski painting is a call to jump for joy, a Cooley painting is a calming meditation on nature’s quiet beauty.
In her first show at Gleason Fine Art, Blue Hill artist Heidi Daub’s thoughtful abstractions express her personal joy at a walk in the woods or along a peaceful stream. While Daub herself is soft-spoken, she is not at all shy about using rich saturated colors to great effect.
Gleason Fine Art is located at 31 Townsend Avenue in the center of Boothbay Harbor. The gallery’s spring hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
