Antiques and fine art appraisal class June 25-27
Rhode Island School of Design/Continuing Education is presenting an Antiques and Fine Art Appraisal Class in Maine with Jackie Sideli, antiques show manager, writer and dealer, on June 25, 26 and 27 in Wiscasset.
This three-day class will give students an opportunity to observe how the antiques and art market drives the local economy and how all levels function together. Sideli will guide students through some of Maine's vibrant antiques scene.
Everyone will attend the famous and informal Montsweag Flea Market, held in the summer months. Then go on to Bailey’s Island to visit the home of antique dealers and collectors James and Nancy Glazer.
For over 30 years the couple exhibited at the Winter Antiques Show in New York City. Students will have a chance to discuss subtle differences in American Folk Art in the gallery and home. Next up, antique dealer Michael Dunn, who spends a part of the year in Beijing, China, will entertain the group when the class travels to Wiscasset. Dunn is a former Winter Antiques Show exhibitor and will speak about Chinese antiques.
John Sideli was a folk art dealer in American antiques for 40 years. He is now an artist working with found materials and is represented by Hirschl and Adler in New York City. Sideli will speak about his collection of African and tribal artifacts, his antiques, and his evolution from a folk art Americana dealer to fine artist in his stunning gallery located in a 19th century ballroom.
June 26, the class will visit notable folk art collector Ray Egan at his home in Boothbay. This is a rare opportunity to view exquisite American folk art and paintings. Students will have a chance to view rarely seen 19th century weather vanes and decoys.
Returning back to Wiscasset, the group will head to Water Street and visit the various shops and galleries. At 5 p.m., students will join in on the once a month Gallery Walk in Wiscasset.
Friday morning the class culminates in a visit to the Maine Maritime Museum, and its founder, Charlie Burden, in Bath. Burden will discuss the founding of the museum and point out some of the many outstanding objects on exhibit there.
