Lois Kramer’s work on display at Southport Memorial Library
A small collection of Lois Kramer’s fiber folk art will be on exhibit at the Southport Memorial Library during the months of July and August. Lois calls her pieces “Needle Tapestries” as they are made by hand, using simple crewel stitches, and cover the entire canvas. These pieces are a continuation of past folk art made in clay.
During that period, Kramer was a member of two ceramic guilds and for some years co-ran their gallery at the Torpedo Factory in Alexandria, Va. Her fiber work is filled with vibrant colors that are influenced by her love of Maine.
Kramer’s joy is in the design work, choosing colors, changing many stitches in “mid-stream,” and finishing the designs with beadwork, feathers and cloth. Her clay work is on permanent display at the American Folklife Center of the Library of Congress and she has exhibited and demonstrated at the Smithsonian Institution.
The Southport Memorial Library is open Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., with evening hours 7 to 9 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays. For more information, call 207-633-2741.
