Gerrish’s parting suggestions
Could Wiscasset’s town website use some improving? How about the layout of the transfer station?
Departing Interim Town Manager Don Gerrish thinks so.
And given Gerrish’s decades of municipal government experience that he has now brought twice to the Wiscasset town manager’s office on temp gigs, Selectmen’s Chairman Pam Dunning said his advice is worth exploring.
Gerrish’s last meeting with the board was August 5. He handed members a list titled, “Town Issues and Items to Work On.” He did the same four years ago, before Laurie Smith came aboard as town manager. (Smith’s departure for the town manager’s job in Kennebunkport led to Gerrish’s return for a second Wiscasset stint in February.) Items on his prior list led to changes that worked out well for the town, Dunning said.
The latest list could be a good resource for the board and for incoming town manager Marian Anderson, Dunning said. Anderson is leaving her Richmond town manager’s job for the one in Wiscasset. She starts August 18.
Six items comprise Gerrish’s list, starting with his suggestion that the town make a plan to take over sewer billing. The town currently pays the Wiscasset Water District $20,000 a year to do the work. Some of that money could instead fund a part-time worker in the town’s finance, tax and clerk’s office, Gerrish told selectmen on August 5. “With the schools coming on and everything that’s going on, they certainly in my opinion need some part-time help. So there’s a way to pay for it without increasing your cost.”
The Wiscasset Transfer Station’s layout should be reviewed for ways to improve safety and operations there, possibly including some additional recycling, Gerrish said; the list also recommends a meeting between the selectmen, the school committee and the investment committee; a secretary to take the appeals board’s minutes, which have legal standing; and a committee to negotiate with unions. All the unions’ contracts run out June 30, 2015.
As for Wiscasset’s website, at www.wiscasset.org, Gerrish told the board, “I say this with all due respect, your website is not very good. It’s old .... It’s not easy to follow. And for a small amount of money you could make it easier to use (and) get more information to everybody.”
Town Clerk Christine Wolfe agreed with Gerrish’s assessment of the website. “It’s hard to navigate,” she said in an interview. “You want your website to be user-friendly.
“At least let’s see what other web hosts have to offer,” Wolfe said.
