When artist Ed McCartan was preparing a presentation for the Harlow Gallery in Hallowell about looking at abstract art, the gallery described his work as incorporating “botanical, spiritual and expressive imagery, using abstract layering and Sumi brushwork techniques.”

Wiscasset Art Walk is pleased to feature a selection of paintings by Ed McCartan during the August 28 event, from 5-8 p.m. His work will be exhibited on the walls of Sarah’s Café at 45 Water Street in Wiscasset Village.

The artist, who lives in Brunswick and has a studio in the mill at Ft. Andross, said his art represents his exploration of botanical and gestural imagery.

“I often use the double image because I am interested in the ‘dialogue’ that this creates between the different areas of the work. Small natural forms, twigs, ferns, flowers, etc. leave room for experimentation with sumi-like strokes and lines and the layering of glazes throughout the composition.”

A life-long teacher of studio art and art history now retired, McCartan continues to offer workshops and private lessons at his studio and through courses at Midcoast Senior College in Bath.

His art gives expression to his interests in philosophy, theology and education.

“I go to nature and the possibilities inherent in the materials for inspiration,” McCartan said. “It is an ongoing endeavor.”

McCartan has exhibited extensively throughout eastern United States and Canada and locally in galleries located in Portland, Brunswick, Damariscotta and Wiscasset among other numerous Midcoast locations.

Sarah's Cafe is located at 45 Water Street, off of Route 1N.

Wiscasset Art Walk is held on the last Thursday of the summer months, ending in September.
