New kitchen, sergeant coming for Damariscotta Police Dept.
It didn't take long for the donations to come pouring in for a new kitchen for the Damariscotta Police Station.
On Wednesday, Sept. 3, the goal of adding a kitchen got a little closer.
Karen Filler of Miles Memorial Hospital League was on hand to present Chief Ron Young with a check for $1,050 to help the police department’s efforts to secure a new kitchen.
“Nancy Fennimore raised most of the money, and we helped raise the rest,” Filler said. “I've lived in Damariscotta, and I live in South Bristol now, but it doesn't matter where you live: Damariscotta is our town and the policemen are always there for us.”
The money will pay for a new sink, among other things for the police who work out of the town offices.
When the kitchen is completed, there will likely be some new faces using it, too, Young said. The police department is down two positions he said, and the process to fill in those spots has begun.
“With Deputy Chief (Chad) Andrews moving to Florida, we're still looking to replace Officer (Ryan) Chubbuck (who went to the Lincoln County Sheriffs Office),” he said. “Officer (John) Sylvester is at the academy and doing very well.
“We're doing the best with what we have, and who we have.”
Young said that a number of veteran officers looking to move to a leadership role have approached him about the possibility of creating a sergeant's role at the police department.
Town Manager Matt Lutkus said that despite the department's relatively small number of full-time officers and employees, there are a number of part-time and reserve employees and officers that could require a second leadership position beyond Chief Young.
