Westport Island drops budget panel
Westport Island voters on Tuesday narrowly agreed to get rid of the town’s budget committee by repealing the ordinance that created it in 2007. The referendum to drop the ordinance garnered 195 yes votes and 174 no’s, Town Clerk Gaye Wagner said. Another 62 ballots for the local referendum were blank, Wagner said.
Tuesday’s decision is a turnaround from voters’ choice in June to keep the budget committee. Selectmen first proposed ending the panel because it didn’t have enough members to carry out its responsibilities.
