Winter classes at Coastal Senior College
Chase cabin fever away by enrolling in a course (or two or three) at Coastal Senior College. Offerings cover a wide range of topics from folk architecture to music history, the U.S. Secret Service to woodcut printing.
New CSC instructor Louis Sell, former U.S. Foreign Service officer, will teach a course on the “Soviet Collapse — How it Happened and its Meaning Today” from personal experience during six years at the U.S. Embassy in Moscow as well as a participant in the Salt I and Start II summits. Sell, an expert on U.S.-Soviet relations, will theme his course to that of the February 2015 Camden Conference’s “Russia Resurgent.”
CSC offers both an ongoing writers’ group organized by Marilyn Muth and a memoir writing workshop focusing on the hero and heroine’s story led by author Debby Atwell.
Dick Miller will teach you how to cut wood blocks and print two-color designs and pictures.
Is music or art your passion? Lucie Bauer, art historian, will examine with students “Painters of Stillness” whose art offers a quiet respite in our fast-moving, fragmented 21st century.
If you love music, come to Marge Roberts’ course on “The Concerto from the Age of Bach to the 20th Century” and revel in the works of Mozart, Beethoven, Brahms, Dvorak and Elgar.
Architect Arnold Aho is teaching a course on the folk architecture of wattle, thatch and half-timbered traditional structures.
Tom McCarthy’s course on the history of the U.S. Secret Service will examine the consequences of political assassinations and the task of protecting the president and other public officials.
If the exchange of ideas stimulates your intellect, come to our ongoing discussion groups, the CSC Coffee House facilitated by Bill Newman and Peter Muth and the Challenge of Change coordinated by Carmen Lavertu.
These two and Marilyn Muth’s writing group are free.
CSC serves seniors age 50 and over in Lincoln and Knox counties with class venues ranging throughout the counties. Classes are $30 each and membership for the year is $25.
