Valentines and knot tying at story hour
It was a treat to have Jessica Graham with Historic New England at the Wiscasset Public Library to incorporate a historical sailor Valentine craft and knot tying lessons along with a story.
The book chosen for Story Hour was "Loud Emily" by Alexis O’Neill, which was about a loud-talking young girl who put her ample volume to good use by helping out on a large sailing vessel.
After the children enjoyed the animated story, everyone made authentic looking sailor valentines, which originated by sailors collecting sea shells throughout their journeys and placing them in beautiful designs on cards for their loved ones. Following the craft-making, we all took turns tying sailor knots using rope pieces.
Story hour is at the Wiscasset Public Library children’s room every Thursday at 10:30 a.m. The library is located at 21 High Street in Wiscasset. For more information, please call 207-882-7161. All good listeners are welcome to enjoy a few stories and an activity to follow.
