Wiscasset Middle School participates in District III Sixth Grade Honors Festival
The Sixth Grade Honors District III Music Festival was held on March 6 at Gardiner Area High School. Wiscasset had nine students taking part in this special event. To be accepted to the festival, students had to receive a recommendation from the music faculty and be accepted by the District III festival managers in order to participate.
Representing the band were Kayla Cossette, clarinet; Brooke Thayer, clarinet; and Eliza Paradis, saxophone. Representing the chorus were Joanna Collins, Abbie DeLong, Gabrielle Leavitt, Savannah Roberts, Jade Shipley and Caitlyn Sudsbury.
The students practiced the music in the weeks leading up to the festival and then came together with students from many other District III schools to rehearse throughout the day, under the expert direction of Nora Krainis (chorus) and Larry Jackson (band).
The concert opened with three selections from the 7th and 8th Grade Jazz Band followed by the Festival Chorus. The chorus sang four pieces, a French folk song, “J’entends Le Moulin,” “The Lion and the Unicorn,” “Creo En Dios” and the uplifting spiritual, “Glory, Glory Hallelujah!”
The Festival Band treated the audience to the familiar “Overture 1812.” Then they played the powerful, “Ceremonium,” followed by “Manhattan Beach” and a spunky tune called, “Cool It!”
Wiscasset Middle School students and staff are very proud of our talented sixth graders who represented our school so professionally at this special festival.
