“Cinderella” directed by Kenneth Branagh, is Walt Disney Studios’ new film. After her father unexpectedly dies, young Ella (Lily James) finds herself at the mercy of her cruel stepmother (Cate Blanchett) and stepsisters, who reduce her to scullery maid. Despite her circumstances, she refuses to despair.
An invitation to a palace ball gives Ella hope that she might reunite with the dashing stranger (Richard Madden) she met in the woods, but her stepmother prevents her from going. Help arrives in the form of a kindly beggar woman who has a magic touch with ordinary things.
“Cinderella” plays 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 8 and Thursday, April 9.
“Mr. Turner” follows the life and career of eccentric British artist J. M. W. Turner (1775–1851) (Timothy Spall). Turner lived his last 25 years with gusto — he secretly becomes involved with a seaside landlady, while his faithful housekeeper (Dorothy Atkinson) bears an unrequited love for him. Throughout, he travels, paints, stays with the country aristocracy, visits brothels, is a popular if anarchic member of the Royal Academy of Arts, has himself strapped to the mast of a ship so that he can paint a snowstorm, and is both celebrated and reviled by the public and by royalty.
“Mr. Turner” premiered in competition for the Palme d'Or at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival, where Timothy Spall won the award for Best Actor and cinematographer Dick Pope received a special jury prize for the film's cinematography.
“Mr. Turner” plays at 7 p.m. on Friday, April 10, Saturday, April 11, Wednesday, April 15 and Thursday, April 16; and at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 12.
