Aviation courses now available in Brunswick
The University of Maine at Augusta’s (UMA) bachelor of science in aviation is now available at Brunswick Landing, the former Naval Air Station located in Brunswick.
This fall 2015 semester, new private pilot level, first-year students who enroll in the aviation program at UMA have the option of attending classes at either UMA’s Augusta campus and Maine Instrument Flight, or at Brunswick Landing.
“We have expanded the aviation program to Brunswick in hopes of being able to offer it to more students,” said Greg Jolda, aviation program coordinator and faculty member. “By collaborating with Southern Maine Community College to provide dorm rooms at Brunswick Landing, we can now offer housing to aviation students who want to relocate from out of state or parts of Maine that are too far away to commute.”
The new location provides on-site flight training and classes taught by UMA faculty and Maine Instrument Flight instructors, as well as room and board for a limited number of students.
Available at half the cost of most nationally comparable programs, UMA’s bachelor of science in aviation is the only program in Maine where students are able to attain their bachelor degree and become an FAA certified commercial pilot at the same time.
There will be an Aviation Program Open Hangar & Information Session on Friday, April 10 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Maine Instrument Flight in Augusta. Representatives from UMA’s Admissions and Student Financial Services offices will be on hand to answer questions.
Instructors and students from the program will also be present, as well as representatives from the Maine Air National Guard, and a local FAA certified physician who will answer questions about the program’s FAA Medical Certificate entrance requirements.
Following the event, prospective students will be split off to tour the Augusta and Brunswick locations.
