Film shows access to local food is no sure thing
While buying local is clearly on the rise, the stories in “Growing Local” make clear that small farms and access to locally produced food are no sure thing. In three short vignettes filmed in Maine we meet first the young farm couple Ben and Taryn, who on risky sweat-equity have revitalized a fertile piece of farmland into a thriving community food hub. Then, artisanal butcher Ben helps us better understand how healthier, thoughtful meat production can be supported and sustained. Finally, Richard and Adam, father and son organic dairy farmers, describe the struggle to keep their family farm going and in the family.
This new documentary film, co-presented by Maine Farmland Trust, will be shown Friday, May 22, 7 p.m., at the FARMS Community Kitchen, 323 Main Street, Damariscotta (entrance at the rear of the Rising Tide Market). The film is free and reservations are not required. Donations may be made to benefit the work of the FARMS teaching team.
