“Minions”: The Merriam Webster dictionary defines “minion” as “someone who is not powerful or important and who obeys the orders of a powerful leader or boss.” Evolving from single-celled yellow organisms at the dawn of time, Minions live to serve, but continue to find themselves working for an ongoing series of unsuccessful masters, from T. rex to Napoleon. Without a master to grovel for, the Minions fall into a deep depression. But one minion, Kevin, has a plan; accompanied by his pals Stuart and Bob, Kevin sets forth to find a new evil boss for his brethren to follow.
Their search leads them to Scarlet Overkill, the world’s first-ever super-villainess. Featuring the voices of Pierre Coffin, Sandra Bullock, Jon Hamm, Michael Keaton, Allison Janney, Steve Coogan and narrated by Geoffrey Rush. Plays at 7 p.m. Friday, July 10 through Thursday, July 16 with a bonus matinee on Sunday, July 12, at 2 p.m.
The San Francisco Opera’s production of “Showboat” (recorded live at Veterans Hall in June 2014) is a true classic of American musical theater, telling the tale of life on the Mississippi from the 1880s to the 1920s. The Jerome Kern-Oscar Hammerstein II score includes such classic songs as “Ol’ Man River,” “Can’t Help Lovin’ Dat Man” and “Make Believe.” Plays at 2 p.m., Wednesday afternoon July15, presented in two acts with a 10-minute intermission. Passes are not accepted for this event. Tickets available at the box office on the day of the show.
