First-ever Harborside Bead Retreat coming to Rocktide
Internationally-recognized bead artist and teacher Laura McCabe will be in Boothbay Harbor Sept. 25 through 27, to teach three full-day workshops as part of the first-ever Harborside Bead Retreat, sponsored by Beauty & the Beads of Sarasota, Florida.
With formal education in historical costume reproduction and restoration, McCabe, of Old Mystic, Connecticut, teaches unique dimensional bead-woven jewelry. She produces elaborate body adornment and sculpture that combines Native American, African and Victorian bead-weaving techniques with modern materials and color schemes.
McCabe shows her work in national and international beadwork exhibitions, and sells her finished work at boutiques and galleries, as well as through her website. She has taught workshops across the United States and around the world, she has numerous publications to her credit, and she has received many awards.
In 2013 she was invited to teach at Beauty & the Beads, by Martha Nikla, who is a jewelry designer, owner of Beauty & the Beads, and part-time resident of Boothbay Harbor.
Knowing that painters, sculptors, crafters, jewelers, photographers, writers, musicians and artists have been attracted to the natural beauty of this harbor community over the years, Nikla believed that Boothbay Harbor would be an ideal setting for a Harborside Bead Retreat. She arranged for the workshops to be held at the Rocktide Inn with numerous activities offered to those who want to make it a complete vacation and learning experience.
In response to inquiries from “beaders” who are limited by time, or who might want to make their own arrangements in lieu of the planned amenities and events, the Harborside Bead Retreat is offering a one-day, two-day or three-day "no frills" workshop option.
More information about the retreat and registration, is available atwww.beadeck.com or by calling Martha Nikla at 1-941-685-2711.
