State recounts finalized
After months of campaigning, more than 21,000 votes cast and an official recount a winner has been decided in the Maine State Senate District 20 race.
On November 21, Christopher Johnson, D-Somerville, remained the winner in the District 20 race over Les Fossel, R-Alna. The recount, which was conducted by the Maine Secretary of State's office concluded that 10,943 votes were cast for Johnson while 10,772 people cast their ballots for Fossel.
The unofficial numbers, which were collected on election day, indicated that Johnson had won, 10,880 to Fossel's 10,746.
In the other local recount, Alan Pinkham, R-Damariscotta, withdrew his name from the recount effort in the House District 51 race. With Pinkham's withdrawal, Michael Devin, D-Newcastle, remained the winner, 2,861-2,770.
The Secretary of State's office has completed its slate of recounts for the 2012 election and no races were overturned.
In the House District 70 race, which covers portions of Lewiston and Auburn, Wayne Werts, D-Auburn, remained the winner over Bruce Bickford, R-Auburn, 2,268-2,264.
In the House District 80 race, Republican Melvin Newendyke topped Democrat Rachel Sukeforth, 2,459-2,455. District 80 includes the towns of Litchfield, Monmouth and Wales.
Republican Amy Volk remained the winner over Democrat Paul Aranson, 2,728-2,716 in the House District 127 race. District 127 covers portions of Scarborough.
Democrat Teresea Hayes beat Republican Timothy Turner, 2,338-2,296 in the recount for the House District 94 race.
In the House District 144 race, which includes Acton, Lebanon and Sanford, Democrat William Moon remained victorious over Republican Daniel John Archambault, 2374-2351.
Democrat Anne Graham won over Republican Susan Austin, 2,768-2,734 in the House district 109 race. District 109 includes Hartford, Buckfield, Paris and Sumner.
Republican Garrett Paul Mason remained victorious in the Senate district 17 race over Democrat Colleen Quint, 9,818-9,790. District 17 covers the towns of Livermore, Livermore Falls, Leeds, Turner, Minot, Mechanic Falls, Greene, Wales Sabattus and Lisbon.
In the House district 45 race, Democrat Brian Jones held on to win over Republican Ryan Harmon, 2,253-2,222. House district 45 covers the towns of Burnham, Freedom, Knox, Montville, Palermo, Thorndike, Troy and Unity.
Democrat Alan Casavant was declared the official winner in the House district 137 race. He won, 2,574-2,559, over Republican William Guay. District 137 covers parts of Biddeford and Kennebun.
In the House district 54 race Democrat Catherine Nadeau remained the winner over Republican Susan Morissette, 2,248-2,196. House district 54 covers Benton and Winslow.
Democrat Stanley Byron Short Jr. remained the winner over Republican Robert Engelhardt Sr., 1,855-1,844 in the House district 29 race. House district 29 covers Clinton, Detroit and Pittsfield.
The last race to be recounted was the Piscataquis County Commissioner race, where Republican Frederick Trask remained the winner over Democrat Donald Crossman, 1,282-1,271.
