Westport Island Selectmen appoint RSU 12 withdrawal committee
Westport Island selectmen appointed the town's RSU Withdrawal Committee at their meeting June 25.
The selectmen appointed the following members to the committee: Mort Mendes, a member of the group that presented the petition to withdraw to the selectmen; Dennis Dunbar, a member from the public; and Selectman Gerald Bodmer. A fourth member will be appointed by the RSU 12 School Board.
According to a letter from Department of Education Commissioner Stephen Bowen, the district school board Chairman Hilary Holm is required to call a meeting of the withdrawal committee within 30 days of written notice of the vote, which means the meeting must take place on or before Wednesday, July 18.
The withdrawal committee is responsible for creating a withdrawal plan, subject to the approval of the commissioner of education.
Mendes and Dunbar said they would be happy to serve. However, Mendes pointed out he would not be available July 2-6.
According to Bowen's letter to the selectmen, the town has thus far fully complied with the requirement of the statue to begin the process.
The newly appointed committee will now wait until the school board chairman sets the first meeting date.
