March Of Dimes "March For Babies" meeting at Skidompha
The March of Dimes will be hosting an informational session on registering and fundraising for the annual March for Babies walks throughout the state this spring. The meeting will be held in the Children's Room at Skidompha Library on Saturday, Jan. 30 at 11 a.m.
Aubrey Martin, family teams specialist for the March of Dimes and Wiscasset resident, will be handing out fundraising materials and discussing different fundraising ideas, as well the history and mission of the March of Dimes. She will also answer any questions about registering for the walk or any details about the specific walk sites.
Children are welcome to attend. There is no cost to attend and there is no registration fee to participate in the walks. All walks are family and pet-friendly and include food, music, and children's activities. Each walk site allows strollers and is three to four miles in length.
March for Babies is the largest fundraiser for the March of Dimes in the state, with walks in Augusta, Portland, York County, Rockland, Bangor, Lewiston and Penquis.
Money raised goes toward research, programming, education and advocacy for prevention of premature birth, birth defects and neonatal death in Maine.
Funding for the Maine chapter goes to heart defect and surfactant therapy research at Jackson Laboratories on Mount Desert Island, and also benefits programming such as Centering Pregnancy and the NICU (neonatal intensive care unit) Family Support Program at Barbara Bush Children's Hospital at Maine Medical Center.
Prenatal care, vaccination research, newborn screenings, and folic acid in the grain supply are just a few of the programs the March of Dimes has funded through the years.
All the money raised in Maine stays in the state. The misnomer is that the March of Dimes is so named because ten cents of every dollar goes toward programming and research, but in fact the name derives from March of Dimes founder Franklin Delano Roosevelt asking the American public to donate a dime toward research for the polio vaccine in 1926. Nationally, 76 cents of every dollar goes toward the mission.
