CTL students hold mock caucus
On Monday, March 7, students at the Center for Teaching and Learning in Edgecomb participated in a mock caucus, modeled after the Maine state caucuses held the weekend before. In the days leading up to the contest, students consulted with their families about the issues and the candidates, registered to vote as either Democrat or Republican, and prepared talking points and signs.
The entire student body, grades kindergarten through eighth, gathered to listen to and deliver statements for all of the candidates. The voters carried homemade signs, wore campaign buttons, and even candidate T-shirts as they cheered for one another's speeches. In keeping with Maine's caucus rules, the Republicans then voted by paper ballot, while the Democrats formed two groups representing supporters of Senator Bernie Sanders and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. The delegates were divided proportionally following a head-count.
Students of all ages, many of whom had attended town caucuses with their parents in the days prior, showed enthusiasm for and involvement in the political process during this exciting morning.
