New summer program for children
"Summer with the Past" is a program for children, ages 8, 9 and 10, sponsored by Lincoln County Historical Association (LCHA) that consists of three week-long sessions providing opportunities for children to be active as they learn about local history. Each session will be held at a different LCHA site: the 1754 Chapman-Hall House in Damariscotta (June 20 – 24), the 1761 Pownalborough Court House in Dresden (July 18 – 22), and the 1811 Old Jail in Wiscasset (August 8 – 12).
Each day the children will be engaged in activities designed to give them a better understanding of the way young people spent their free time in Lincoln County over 200 years ago. They will construct a journal, learn about navigational tools, shop for goods using the bartering system, engage in art projects, and play games that relate to the time period of the particular historic site. Each child will choose an historical themed book to borrow for the week for reading at home.
Summer with the Past was created by Louise Miller, coordinator of Lincoln County Historical Association’s Education Outreach program. The goal of this program is to provide children with a greater understanding of the unique history of this part of New England.
Mrs. Miller has an extensive background in museum work and school programs built on American history, particularly daily life in the 18th and early 19th centuries. During the rest of the year, she works with mid-coast schools to enhance awareness of LCHA’s three historic sites and the roles they played in the development of the Lincoln County we know today.
