Mulligan selected as Sea Dog Hall of Fame Starting 9 teacher
An Edgecomb math and social studies teacher is one of nine honorees throwing out the first pitch at Hadlock Field on June 10. UNUM and the Portland Sea Dogs has named Terry Mulligan and eight other outstanding Maine educators to the 2016 Maine Teachers Hall of Fame Starting 9.
The insurance giant and Double AA professional baseball team has honored teachers for the past 12 years whose efforts have consistently increased student achievement. UNUM requests each year principals statewide nominate deserving teachers. A committee selected the winners based on their creativity and innovation in the classroom.
Besides throwing out the first pitch, the Starting 9 receive a personalized Sea Dog jersey, eight tickets to the June 10 game, and $500. Mulligan has worked 36 years teaching in the classroom. The last 30 have been at Edgecomb Eddy School. She knew about the Hall of Fame Starting 9 because her Edgecomb Eddy colleague Jennifer Gosselin received the honor a few years ago.
Mulligan was notified May 17 about her selection.
“It came as a real surprise. I really don’t know much about it except that I get to throw out the first pitch and receive a hat and jersey,” she said.
Mulligan was nominated by Edgecomb Eddy Principal Lisa Clarke. She described Mulligan’s students as being well-prepared for junior high and beyond.
“Terry brings enthusiasm, professionalism, and energy into the classroom each day. She is a real asset to the school,” Clarke said.
Mulligan teaches grades 4, 5 and 6. One of the Hall of Fame Starting 9’s requirements is bringing innovation into the classroom. Mulligan brought Kahn Academy, an online personalized math learning resource for all ages, into her classroom several years ago.
Clarke said Mulligan is always looking to foster student development.
“If there is a student struggling, she works that much harder. She looks for resources to help students and gives up her time. She is a standout teacher,” Clarke said.
Fifth grader Catherine Hibbard praised her teacher.
“Mrs. Hibbard is awesome. She is just the best person in the world,” Hibbard said.
Mulligan plans to practice her throwing with students during recess in preparation for delivering the ceremonial first pitch.
