Wiscasset teachers pass new contract
Wiscasset teachers have approved their first labor contract since the town left Sheepscot Valley Regional School Unit 12, officials for the union and the department confirmed June 9.
The teachers association voted June 6 to ratify the deal, according to officials. The pact got the School Committee’s approval in May. So the teachers’ vote was the last step before the paperwork is finalized and signed, department officials said.
Teachers and support staff have been working under prior RSU contracts since Wiscasset’s school department opened in 2014. The committee and the support association passed a new pact earlier this spring.
“I’m really happy that everything’s set up and ready to go,” Committee Chairman Steve Smith said June 9 about reaching the second of the two deals. “We really appreciate the teachers for working with us on the new contract,” he added.
The RSU had to take all its towns into consideration on contracts, but Wiscasset’s will meet its needs, not the needs of a combination of towns, Smith said.
Sue Townsend heads the teachers association. She confirmed in an email response to the Wiscasset Newspaper that the association ratified the deal. Townsend did not immediately respond to additional questions.
Officials have not released details of either deal while the paperwork and signing are pending.
Each of the new pacts runs out at the end of this school year, Superintendent of Schools Heather Wilmot said. Asked about a new round of negotiations for subsequent contracts, Wilmot wrote in an email that the parties need to agree on when to restart the process.
