Music classes for homeschoolers offered
The Preston Music Studio in Damariscotta announces an expansion in educational services beginning in September. Carol Preston, owner, established the studio 15 years ago and has been teaching violin and viola students using the Suzuki Method. This fall she will be offering music classes for homeschooled students to help round out their education. Preston, who has 15 years of experience teaching public school music, is excited to offer a general music curriculum for students ages 5-14.
For homeschoolers, this is a great alternative to private music lessons or a supplement to them,” she said. “I know many adults don’t feel comfortable enough in their own music knowledge or skills to educate their kids. That’s why I’m offering these classes. Plus, music is very participatory and is a fun way to provide homeschoolers a group activity.”
Students will be grouped according to age and will learn to sing, perform on simple instruments (such as bells, recorders, hand drums, and ukuleles), move to music, and create music. In addition, they will explore a variety of music styles and traditions. Classes will be offered once each week on a semester basis.
