Quilts for the Gingerbread Men
Mrs. Hallowell's kindergarten class at Wiscasset Elementary School read “The Quilt Story” about how a quilt made long ago for a girl named Abigail traveled through the country over time and kept people and animals warm. Then the kids discovered a note from the Gingerbread Man asking the kids to create a quilt for him to keep him warm.
We took on the challenge and determined if there were enough gingerbread men for each member of the class to come up with a quilt. First, we counted our classmates and then matched one gingerbread man per student to be sure everyone had one.
The kids had a problem: they needed to find a way to cut just the right amount of fabric to make a quilt for the Gingerbread Man. After a long discussion, the children used squares to measure the length of the Gingerbread Man. Then they had to decide if their quilt would cover up to the Gingerbread Man's chest, or go over the Gingerbread Man's head. They recorded their work in their math books and then measured the fabric with their squares for cutting.
Finally, the kids tucked in their Gingerbread Men to keep them warm and happy for the cold night ahead.
