St. Philip’s bean supper steeple fundraiser Feb. 18
Cabin fever taking hold? A reliever is on the horizon: St. Philip’s Church, 12 Hodge St., Wiscasset, bean and casserole supper on Saturday, Feb. 18, with seatings from 5 to 6 p.m. The charge is by donation with all proceeds going to help fulfill the church’s responsibility for matching the Maine Community Foundation’s grant that aided in the reconstruction of the church’s historic steeple.
Several variations of beans will be offered, from vegan to vegetarian to meat lovers’ delight. Along with the beans, attendees will have a choice of hot dogs — meat and vegan — salads, casseroles, breads, desserts, and beverages. No donation is too small or too large. It all helps to fulfill the church’s commitment while enjoying the camaraderie of breaking bread together.
The steeple is the oldest and tallest one of the Wiscasset skyline. It was designed by eminent 19th century architect Francis H. Fassett, who also designed the church’s American Gothic rectory. Since 1857, the steeple has presided over weddings, baptisms, funerals and Sunday services, as well as many outreach activities. The town below it has grown and changed, but the steeple remains a fixed point around which this change can be reckoned.
For questions or to make a reservation — not necessary but helps in planning — please call St. Philip’s at 882-7184. Leave your name, the number attending, and a return phone number for verification.
