Survey opens, search starts for principal
The search is on for Wiscasset Elementary School’s next principal, and Superintendent of Schools Heather Wilmot is using some of the same tools she said have worked well for her before.
Wilmot is again running an online survey and carrying out other parts of the search process she has used in other leadership hires, including having an advisory committee. In an email response to questions Tuesday, Wilmot said her past surveys’ participation rates and the feedback the surveys have drawn show they are a valuable tool.
Participants get to be anonymous but still be heard and their views considered, Wilmot writes. “The feedback has ... contributed to the hiring of professionals who are well-aligned with the direction of the school department.”
The survey at www.surveymonkey.com/r/BMPVTH3 asks respondents four questions: their connection to WES; what they would ask a candidate; their rankings of seven leadership practices; and what other information the department should consider.
The job is posted at www.servingschools.com/job/xltf5s and www.wiscassetschools.org/home/employment-opportunities. Applications close March 3 at 4 p.m. That’s also when the survey closes.
Wilmot said the advisory panel will have a set of criteria as it reviews applications. Then come interviews; and prospective finalists will host site visits or provide electronic presentations. Those who make the next round get an interview with Wilmot and two other administrators, as well as a meet-and-greet with two school committee members, Wilmot said.
She hopes to have a finalist for the full school committee to consider before April break.
WES Principal Mona Schlein retires at the end of the school year.
