If you use caller ID to screen your calls, you have probably noticed it is no longer reliable. Scammers can use various methods to produce a fake caller ID on your phone or answering machine in an effort to gain your trust.

Boothbay Harbor Police Chief Bob Hasch said the department has received numerous calls about this scheme to fool people into releasing personal information. Residents have reported calls that appear to come from large corporations such as Microsoft, as well as calls that caller ID identifies as local residents, businesses and organizations, such as St. Andrews healthcare offices and local law enforcement.

Hasch warns residents to keep their guard up when receiving any unsolicited phone call. If a call seems questionable or if the caller asks for personal information, Hasch suggests ending the call and calling back the organization directly. He said police will not be able to trace these calls.

When it comes to unsolicited phone calls, do not trust and always verify.
