John Vander’s ‘Classic Jazz Series’ at Gold/Smith Gallery
Gold/Smith Gallery is pleased to announce a new series of mixed media drawings by Boothbay artist John Vander. The Classic Jazz Series is the artists newest works on paper featuring all the energy, colors and rhythms of the music Vander likes best. The subject, jazz, has been one that he has enjoyed painting for many decades. Every time he paints the “music” the emotions get stronger, the colors more profound and the sense of joy reverberates.
The paintings are a tribute to the music and the musicians of jazz. Bill Coleman, Thelonius Monk, Sidney Bechet, all the greats, come forth on paper like there is a concert in each frame. Their music can be felt through their color and composition as if the viewer was enjoying them live at The Blue Note or Birdland. A virtual symphony for the senses!
John Vander has lived in the Boothbay region since infancy. He now splits his studio time between Maine and Tuscany. This spring John Vander was honored to have a one man exhibit at the Fondazione Marino Marini in Pistoia, Italy for two months. The show “I Measure Time By How The Body Sways” was a series of large format paintings about swing and jazz dancers. This series will be featured at Gold/Smith Gallery in August 2018.
Gold/Smith Gallery will have an opening reception at their gallery Saturday, Sept. 2 from 4- 7 p.m. The public is invited to attend, meet John Vander and feel his “music.”
Gold/Smith Gallery is located at 8 McKown Street, Boothbay Harbor. The gallery is open Monday through Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday noon to 5 p.m. and can be reached at 633-6252 or online at www.goldsmithgallery.net.
