Ruth J. Applin
Ruth Jones Applin, 100, of Churchill Street, Wiscasset died Aug. 25, 2017 at her residence. She had the Boston Cane for Wiscasset.
She was born on April 16, 1917 in Damariscotta Mills in Nobleboro, a daughter of Melrose and Eola (Jackson) Jones.
She moved to Wiscasset when she was 5, making her home with Uncle John and Aunt Harriet Jackson. She graduated from Wiscasset Academy in 1935 and was employed for eight years at New England Telegraph & Telephone, the Dodge Inn for 20 summers in Edgecomb, the Wiscasset school cafeterias, and helped with many families in Wiscasset and surrounding towns. She married Robert Applin on December 26, 1940.
She joined the First Congregational Church in Wiscasset in 1933 where she taught Sunday school and was a member of Lady’s Organ Society sewing group for many years. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, Post 54 for many years where she was past president and chaplain. Ruth was active in the Wiscasset Senior Center.
She loved fishing, camping with her husband and family. She was an avid knitter and quilter, making hats, quilts and potholders.
She was predeceased by her husband Robert Applin on March 8, 1983; one son, James on October 8, 1989; granddaughter, Terri Ann Applin McKinlay; and two sisters, Mellicant Ball and Mary Elizabeth Norburg.
She is survived by two sons, John R. Applin and his wife Pauline of Topsham and Phillip A. Applin and his partner Angela Hoch of Waldoboro; two daughters, Betty Lee Applin of Wiscasset and Bobbie Ann Willis and her husband William of Waldoboro; one brother, Arthur Jones of Nobleboro, who has the Boston Cane for Nobleboro; 11 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
A celebration of life will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 9 at the First Congregational Church of Wiscasset, High Street, Wiscasset. Burial will follow at Jackson Cemetery in Wiscasset. A gathering of family and friends will follow at the Church Fellowship Hall.
