Boothbay artist Brenda Bettinson’s works included in World War I exhibit
Mathias Fine Art is pleased to announce that a group of paintings by noted gallery artist Brenda Bettinson has been included in the current exhibition “World War One: Letters Home,” which is on display at the Holocaust and Human Rights Center of Maine located on the campus of the University of Maine at Augusta in the beautiful Michael Klahr Center through Oct. 13.
Four paintings from Bettinson’s “The Earth Remembers” series together with three new paintings from “The Earth and The Sea” series, which have never been shown before, were selected by program director David Greenham to give the exhibition a contemporary visual component. Also on display is the mixed media piece “Nurse Edith Cavell” from Bettinson’s 2012 “Revenants” series. Bettinson’s work has been focused on war and conflict for the last decade and her current studio production continues to treat that subject matter in innovative ways.
The exhibition is describes as “an intimate and personal glimpse into the experiences and feelings of young people during wartime one century ago.” Other material in the “World War One: Letters Home” exhibition includes letters, photos, and artifacts documented by Maine college students, Maine residents, and their family members; and artifacts from the Maine Military Museum, The Maine State Museum, the Kennebec Historical Society, and Millinocket Historical Society; and the special collections departments of The Fogler Library at The University of Maine at Orono, and Bates and Colby colleges.
The Holocaust and Human Rights Center of Maine is located at 46 University Drive, Augusta. This program is free and open to the public. For more information, call 207-621-3530 or visit www.hhrcmaine.org
