Panel approves two certificates
The Historic Preservation Commission on Sept. 21 approved two requests for certificates of appropriateness. The first was for a garage at 40 Federal St. at a former funeral home. The new owners, Robert Bond and Ernest Gallerani, had appeared at the last meeting but were told that the request couldn’t be approved because the commission hadn’t received their application two weeks earlier.
Commodore Don Davis was also told at a prior meeting that the Yacht Club’s application for a small shed would have to be reviewed at the following meeting because the commission hadn’t received it earlier. Davis had dropped off copies earlier that day, but the members said they did not have access to them because the copies were in a locked office. Both certificates were approved Sept. 21.
A third request for the demolition of a barn on Lee Street was put off until Oct. 5 to give the owner time to get some additional estimates and paperwork from the code enforcement officer. That meeting will also include a certificate request for a Habitat for Humanity project.
The commission also made plans to hold a history open house Oct. 19 at 5 p.m. at the municipal building. “It would be good for Wiscasset residents and other interested people to learn a little bit about our historic buildings,” Chair John Reinhardt said.
A vote to repeal the Historic Preservation Ordinance, which would also do away with the commission, is slated for the ballot on Nov. 7. “There is talk in the selectmen’s meetings that they are unhappy with the Historic Preservation Commission,” commission member Susan Blagden said. “But not one of them has come to one of our meetings.”
