Oyster connoisseur speaks at local restaurant
A renowned oyster expert will join guests at a seven-course wine, beer and oyster pairing at The World Is Mine Oyster restaurant on Saturday, July 14, from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m.
Rowan Jacobsen, author of “A Geography of Oysters: The Connoisseur’s Guide to Oyster Eating in North America,” will be speak and sign books at the restaurant, on Pier One, Boothbay Harbor.
Ralph Smith, owner of Mine Oyster, said the book is one of a kind and was used as inspiration for the menu at the restaurant.
Jacobsen has authored multiple books and articles, the product of his travels and his interest in how the taste of food is influenced by the environment in which it is grown and produced.
“I wrote a guidebook about oysters that came out in ’07. It’s always been a passion of mine; I grew up eating them in Florida,” Jacobsen said.
Though Jacobsen has no professional experience as a chef, he calls himself “a pretty serious home cook,” and spent an entire year actively traveling the country visiting numerous oyster farms as well as spending time with executive oyster chefs and tasting their creations.
Jacobsen even visited Glidden Point Oyster Sea Farm in Edgecomb while writing his book. He considers this area one of the finest oyster growing regions in the nation.
He teamed up with Mine Oyster for its menu for the event and is particularly excited about the course featuring Pacific Coast oysters, which will offer guests a chance to taste oysters that have a different flavor.
He spoke with a Washington grower to arrange for the delivery of Pacific oysters. It’s “a grower I really like that grows amazing oysters you don’t encounter on this coast. They are completely different than the oysters out here.”
Jacobsen is looking forward to returning to Boothbay Harbor to speak at the event, and said he is willing to offer a quick shucking lesson to any interested attendees.
The event costs $85 per person. To learn more about Jacobsen and his work, visit www.rowanjacobsen.com
