Alna rejects mining ordinance
After one of the day’s longest discussions, Alna town meeting goers Saturday, March 23 decided in a secret ballot vote, not to adopt the proposed mining ordinance, Second Selectman Steve Graham said. Voters passed solar and all other ordinance proposals except the mining one, he said.
Asked via email later if the planning board will work on the mining one further to bring back to voters, that board’s chair, Cathy Johnson, responded: “I don't know yet. Just too early to say.”
Graham said voters decided to keep road commissioner an elected office; a warrant article offered them the chance to change it to appointed, as the town did several years ago for treasurer, according to Wiscasset Newspaper files.
Despite Saturday’s storm, turnout at the fire station for town meeting was strong, Graham said.
