Andrew R. Watts
Andrew Radcliffe Watts, age 40, beloved son, brother, nephew, and cousin passed away unexpectedly on June 22, 2024, at his parent’s summer home in East Boothbay, Maine.
Andrew was born in East Greenwich, Rhode Island where he attended public schools and graduated as salutatorian of his class.
Andrew was a gentle and kind man, soft-spoken, smart and interested in sharing meaningful conversations. His brilliance for math, geography, history, and economics became clear at an early age. His family has fond memories of his memorization of every major bridge and its construction from Rhode Island to New York City and beyond, all at the age of 3.
He excelled in school, studying mathematics and philosophy at Yale. He was awarded the Richard U. Light Fellowship to study Japanese language and culture through studying abroad. He had a knack for languages and became fluent in Japanese, and later, Korean. Upon graduating, he was recruited at 21 by Goldman Sachs in Tokyo. He later worked in the Hong Kong and South Korea offices as well, excelling in his role as Vice President and Executive Director, Global Markets.
Andrew loved skiing, tennis, running, piano, classical music, and chess. He was just as likely to be engaged in a deep intellectual conversation, as throwing out a well-timed pun or tearing up the dance floor at a family member's wedding. He had a theatrical side and could perform scenes and soliloquies from "It’s a Wonderful Life" to Lord Byron. He had a love for nature and appreciated the peacefulness found in watching birds and wildlife.
Japan was where he spent most of his working life. The culture and food agreed with him and he greatly appreciated the beauty of the shrines, temples, gardens and countryside. Several family members visited him there and learned about the country through his eyes, exploring small villages and islands in addition to the excitement of Tokyo and Kyoto. A memorable trip was when his beloved Grandmother came to Japan with a desire to see Hiroshima at age 80. Andrew had a facility with the language in each place he lived and made a wonderful tour guide.
Andrew was ever thoughtful, in his letters, gifts and consideration of others and would never hesitate to lend a listening ear. He was so loved by many but was challenged in finding peace in himself. He struggled with depression and inner conflicts most of his life. Despite his struggles, he touched the lives of those who knew him, with his patience, sincerity, and heart.
Andrew is survived by his mother, Pam; his father, Tom; his brother, Tim, and his wife, Sonya; his sister, Jacqui, and her husband, Jay; his nieces and nephew: Sila, Blaise, and Gia; and aunts, uncles, and cousins on both the Watts and Radcliffe sides of the family.
His entire family is deeply saddened by the loss of him.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, The Brain and Behavior Research Foundation, or International Pain Foundation are much appreciated.
Arrangements are entrusted to Hall Funeral Home and Crematory,975 Wiscasset Road, Boothbay. Condolences may be shared with the family at hallfuneralhomes.com.
