Burning permits from cyberspace
It sounds like the title of a bad movie, but Woolwich residents learned at Monday night’s selectmen’s meeting that they may now obtain their burning permits online.
Town Fire Chief Geoffrey McCarren, called the board’s attention to the website http://www.wardensreport.com, which can now be accessed by individuals who wish to obtain burning permits.
The website allows towns to provide free burning permits to residents who can sign up using the Internet. The state charge for a burning permit is $7.
Wardens Report is the bright idea of Gary Hickey and Chris McLaughlin who are both involved in public safety in Maine and who started the website in 2012. The site offers a range of capabilities that appeal to fire chiefs, dispatchers, forest rangers and town wardens.
The wardens report database contains information on all permits issued — whether active or old.
Using the data base, public safety personnel can track locations for burns and links to a map provide directions that may be needed by emergency personnel.
Other advantages of the website over state issued burn permits are the ability for a local chief to set and control burn times.
Users of the website can distribute permits to multiple cell phones via text messaging. The text message also provides local public safety personnel with the contact number for the person obtaining the burn permit. Approximately 28 towns in Maine are currently subscribers to the service.
