Coastal Rivers offers online program on the American chestnut tree
Is there hope for the near-mythic American chestnut tree? In an online program hosted by Coastal Rivers Conservation Trust, Dr. Donald Edward Davis will explore the rich ecological and cultural history of this stately tree as well as potential for its future. The program is scheduled for 4 to 5 p.m. on Friday, March 4.
Davis will provide an overview of the ecological importance of chestnut trees, their importance to human culture over time, and their recent decline to near-extinction. He will touch on the on-going debate about how to save the American chestnut, and whether it can be restored to its former place in forests of the Northeast. Davis will also explain the specific role that Maine may be able to play in this restoration process, and what people can do to become involved.
An award-winning author who has lectured widely in the US and throughout Europe about chestnut trees, Davis is the author of the recently published book “The American Chestnut: An Environmental History.”
