Community offers support for fire victim
Dear Editor:
When you get a call first thing in the morning and learn your father, grandfather or great-grandfather's house is on fire, it's terrifying. Seeing it is devastating and heart-breaking. While it's easy to focus on the pain and loss, we know John is finding comfort in family members and friends whose support keeps him going. In the days since the Oct. 21 fire in Alna, our family has said to each other time and time again how in awe we are of the way this entire community has come together to show their support and love of John Seigars Sr., the patriarch and beating heart of our family.
We are grateful for the tireless work of the firemen who overcame many obstacles while fighting the fire, containing it to one structure and preventing any injuries in the process.
We are very grateful for the staff at The Marketplace Cafe in Wiscasset. When John showed up there the morning of the fire for his usually breakfast, they not only met him with empathy and compassion, but they swept into action to make sure he knew that he had support and would not be alone in rebuilding after his loss. The comfort they provided him and the steps they took instantly to set up a fund and benefit dinners is so appreciated.
We are thankful for the Wiscasset, Waterville Farmington Railroad for offering a train ride and collecting donations.
We want to express a special thank you to the seamstress who has been hemming his pants. While she sees this as a small gesture, we know it makes a big difference in his daily comfort.
Our family and John would also like to extend a sincere thank you to every person who has found it in their heart to help him come back from this. There have been so many donations of clothing, books, money, silent auction items from area businesses, and even offers from people with building skills to help him build a new home!! The way in which this community has come together to hold up this wonderful man is simply inspiring!
The Family of John Seigars Sr.
