Contemporary Maine art show at Saltwater Gallery
Find your way to the Saltwater Artists cooperative gallery to view a new and exciting offering of contemporary Maine art at the Saltwater Gallery through June 20.
Work on view by Carol Wiley of Jefferson, shows a new-found freedom, allowing “the use of a variety of media to explore color relationships, interesting shapes, and linear movement without restriction.”
Great examples of Wiley’s exploration of color and shape are shown in the newest work premiering at the gallery this spring. The “Kimono Series” reflect this direction in a series of 12 collages recycled from Wiley’s watercolor, oil and acrylic paintings. Each “Kimono” piece shows off strong use of color and design.
Judine French's (of Cumberland Foreside) latest work shows off Maine’s seacoast in watercolors, approaches each work using a contemporary palette to express the beauty French sees around her. French’s work has been shown in numerous local and state juried exhibitions.
“Nature, through my eyes, is very colorful and joyous and as I paint each piece, I work to capture its essence through my art,” French said.
New to Saltwater this season, Mary Kay Spencer of Litchfield is a potter who brings a contemporary approach as the work evolves over her 30-year career as a working potter.
An owner and artisan of The Potter’s House in Litchfield with her husband, Jeff, she crafts fine, colorfully hand painted stoneware pieces that please the eye and feel good in the hand.
Spencer’s current work uses bold colors and oxides, incorporating digital photographs and decal work into traditional pottery, mixing classic organic shapes with modern lines and rich details through an inventive manipulation of images and patterns.
Kay Miller of South Bristol continues to explore her career as a contemporary print maker. She (and Frances Hodsdon) formed the Midcoast Printmakers, Inc. in Damariscotta.
Her skill and exploration of this exciting medium has produced monotypes, collographs and etchings which reflect a love of nature combined with using actual botanical grasses and ferns in the lithographs. Kay continues to offer classes at the Midcoast Printers.
