CTL: A professional development destination
The Center for Teaching and Learning, a K-8 demonstration school in Edgecomb, has welcomed groups of teacher-interns for the past two weeks from all over the country—and the world. For 25 years, teachers have visited Edgecomb for a week at a time to observe methods developed by CTL’s faculty and adapt them to their own classrooms and schools. The past two weeks’ interns included teachers from schools in Colorado, Connecticut, three different Massachusetts towns, and India.
Although not a charter school, CTL accomplishes what charter schools were conceived to do—innovate, and then pass along successful methods to teachers in public school classrooms. Faculty members experiment thoughtfully, write books and give presentations, are featured in educational DVD’s about CTL’s programs, and demonstrate their methods in-person to the visiting teachers.
More than six hundred teachers from forty states, Washington, D.C., Australia, Brazil, Canada, Ecuador, England, India, Japan, the Philippines, Taiwan, and Uganda have participated so far in the CTL intern program. Only classroom teachers may apply to become interns; the fee they pay helps underwrite tuition assistance for CTL students.
CTL will hold its fall open house for members of the community on Sunday, Oct. 23, from 3:30 to 5 p.m. To visit when school is in session, prospective parents should call Scott MacDonald, Head of School, at 882-9706 to schedule a day to attend a whole-school morning meeting and take a tour of the facilities. For more information, visit the school’s website at http://www.c-t-l.org or follow us on Facebook at www.facebook.com/ctlkto8.
