CTL students honored for letters to authors
The Maine Center for the Book has honored four sixth-grade students from Glenn Powers’ writing class at Edgecomb’s Center for Teaching and Learning. The students were recognized as part of the 2014 Letters About Literature contest, a national competition sponsored by the Library of Congress in which students write to the author of a book, poem, or speech that has affected them personally.
Katie Larson of Southport placed first in Level I (Grades 4-6) and received $100 for her letter to Peter H. Reynolds about his book "Ish," and how it taught her patience with her own mistakes. Sydney Sullivan of Brunswick placed second with her letter about "Out of My Mind" to the author, Sharon Draper. Zak Bhe of Nobleboro and Nicco Bartone of Georgetown received honorable mentions. Zak wrote about "Trash" by Andy Mulligan, and Nicco wrote about "One for the Murphys" by Lynda Mullaly Hunt.
The Maine Center of the Book is the programming arm of the Maine Humanities Council. This is the 12th year they have run the Letters About Literature contest in Maine; they received nearly 1,000 total submissions from around the state. Letters honored at the state level go on to the national competition.
