CTL students win high honors in Mathcounts competition

The Center for Teaching and Learning in Edgecomb participated in our chapter's regional Mathcounts competition at Kennebec Valley Community College on Saturday, January 28, and won several high honors.

Middle schoolers Jojo Shea, Gigi Sato-Papagiannis, Fina Record, and Ori Taylor, CTL's official team, took second place in the competition. They are the first all-female team to do so in our chapter, and they displayed impressive camaraderie, cooperation, and knowledge along the way.

Since each school is only allowed to enter one team, CTL students also formed an “unofficial” team that tied for first place in the unofficial team category.

In addition, CTL students placed in the top ten Countdown Round, which is similar to a Jeopardy game competition, with individual participants, quick questions, and buzzers. Eighth graders Jojo Shea and Ori Taylor placed in the top ten individual scorers.

CTL is consistently among the smallest schools participating in local Mathcounts competitions, yet has achieved increasingly excellent results due to the students’ passion for the subject, hard work, and strong math program. The next step for CTL’s mathletes is the state competition in March, where they’ll again be coached by Shannon Meers, Nick Record, and Katie Rittershaus.
