CTL students win poetry awards
Eight students from the Center for Teaching and Learning in Edgecomb were honored by the Poetry Society of Virginia as part of the society’s international 2023 student contest.
For the third year in a row, CTL students took a clean sweep of the third and fourth grade category! Roy Journagan of Alna placed first for his poem, “Otter.” Keegan Cotta of Alna placed second for his poem, "Glistening Snow." Charlie Record of Boothbay placed third for his poem, "Seaside." And Norah Ballard received an honorable mention for her poem, "Eagle."
In the fifth and sixth grade category, Mary Philbrick of Alna placed first for her poem, "Hidden," and Octavia Aurora of Edgecomb placed third for her poem, "Aisha."
In the seventh and eighth grade category, Ori Taylor of Westport Island placed first for her poem, "Broken Headlight," and Karen Higgins of Boothbay received an honorable mention for her poem, "Winter."
The Poetry Society of Virginia is the second oldest state poetry society in the nation. The PSV awards its youth poetry winners with monetary prizes of $25, $15, and $10 to first, second, and third places respectively. Each honored student also receives notes from their category’s judge offering feedback about his or her poem and details about why it was chosen to be honored.
