The Maine Region of the Scholastic Writing Competition has named 11 middle-school students from Edgecomb’s Center for Teaching and Learning as recipients of its 2014 awards for excellence in writing.

Many of the students won multiple prizes for submissions in different genres.

They are Charlotte Collins of Woolwich (persuasive writing); Amelia Genus of Edgecomb (poetry); Teagan Guenther of Bath (memoir, persuasive writing, and poetry); Noah Jordan of Alna (fiction), Ridgely Kelly of Bremen (poetry); Maggie Larson of Southport (poetry); Teddy Matel of Round Pond (poetry); Nicholas Miaoulis of Newcastle (fiction); Sara Powers of Edgecomb (memoir); Sophia Stafford of Alna (persuasive writing); and Payton Sullivan of Brunswick (persuasive writing, poetry and two pieces of fiction).

The work of four of the students, Gold Key winners Noah Jordan, Teddy Matel, Nicholas Miaoulis and Payton Sullivan, has been submitted for judging at the national level.

The Scholastic Art and Writing Awards are the gold standard for recognizing the creative achievements of U.S. students in grades 7-12. The writers and their teacher, Anne Atwell-McLeod, will be among those honored at a reception at the University of Southern Maine, sponsor of the state level of the Scholastic competition, on Friday, March 14.
