FOS’ Set for Success expanding to more grades
It’s hard to believe that Feed Our Scholars (FOS) began its mission of helping Wiscasset Schools’ children 10 years ago! FOS has persisted in its commitment to help referred local schoo children by feeding their bodies when they’re not in school so they are better able to access their learning potential when they are in school.
An initiative called Set for Success (S4S) has been part of the Feed Our Scholars mission since 2019. Inspired by Boothbay’s stratagem, the Wiscasset group raises funds and in-kind donations to give each child a school spirit-inspiring red and black (school colors) backpack and supplies, no matter the ability to pay.
For the 2023-24 school year, S4S is growing its mission! From giving supplies for Pre-K to grade five, the group will be providing materials through grade eight. Working with both schools’ staff, the supply list has been developed for purchase. That wish list is now registered on Amazon at tinyurl.com/S4S2023 where anyone can support this initiative by those items marked Set For Success that are conveniently sent to St. Philip’s Church for Feed Our Scholars.
Save the date: On Aug. 13, a grand party will be hosted by Set for Success and Parents in Education at Wiscasset Community Center on Gardiner Road, from 1 to 3 p.m. Not only will each child, accompanied by an adult, be given their backpack and a grade-appropriate shopping list to work with. Plans are in the works for activities such as touch-a-truck, have lunch and a popsicle, explore many community outreach information booths, get their vision checked, select gently used clothes, and so much more.
As a way of helping, on July 15, at Ames Supply on Route One from 7:30 to 1:30, there will be a bake sale to help support the purchase of supplies and backpacks. Homemade goodies for a donation can be whisked away. Feel virtuous eating those sweets and savories as you support children being “set for success.”
