Wiscasset
Future of the schools committee continues regrouping
Three years after Wiscasset voters nodded a committee to study the future of the town’s schools, and a month into the panel’s new plan to meet monthly, the July 15 meeting was cancelled.
“We apologize for the late notice but we will not be meeting tomorrow (July 15),” Future of the Schools Ad Hoc Committee Chair Duane Goud and Sarah Whitfield, selectmen’s liaison to the committee, wrote in a joint email sent July 14 to members and others. The two explained, work is still under way to fill two open seats, and the school committee has yet to replace one of its representatives on the future of the schools committee. The school committee is set to meet later this month, the email noted; all of which leaves three seats to be filled on the future of the schools committee.
“So we felt with three members already automatically not there and at least one (other) member unable to attend, it made sense to fully restart in August,” Sunday’s email read. “July is a difficult month for many as well with vacations/family visiting/etc. Again, apologies for the last minute cancellation but we look forward to meeting in August with the full committee.”
That meeting is at 6 p.m. Aug. 19 at the town office.
Members also received homework. The email asked them to look at the draft minutes from June and “let us know if there are any corrections.” In that June 17 meeting, participants made plans to fix the committee’s first report, released last year. According to the June 17 discussion, tuitioning out the high school grades might save money after all, depending on some other figures still to be factored in. Whitfield explained, the first report included in the calculation out of town students who attend Wiscasset Middle High School’s high school grades, and should have only included Wiscasset ones.
