Governor Janet Mills’ leadership
Dear Editor:
This coming Monday is Labor Day, the holiday traditionally marking the end of summer and the beginning of the campaign season for elected office in November. But at its heart, having developed out of the labor movement when working conditions were deplorable, the holiday honors the dignity of labor and celebrates the gains made by working people for a better life. I am proud that our governor recognizes that workers are the backbone of the state of Maine, and that she has invested in the Maine people by creating good-paying jobs to ensure that every worker and working family has the opportunity to thrive in Maine.
The pandemic was a threat to job security. But under Governor Janet Mills’ leadership, Maine did not layoff, furlough, or freeze the pay of any state employee, unlike other states.
By her “Maine Thrive” program, she has established forgivable loans for small businesses that experienced losses, increased costs or market interruptions due to the pandemic. She has also made investments in Maine’s heritage industries so that this traditional workforce can receive the support needed to train and pay workers in bringing Maine products to market.
Recognizing that a flourishing Maine workforce involves needs outside of the job itself, through her Maine Jobs & Recovery plan Governor Mills has made historic investments in Maine workers by funding education and training programs, more affordable housing, comprehensive health care, and child care.
Stating that in the last four years the state of Maine has made more progress in passing pro-worker legislation than in the prior forty years, the Maine AFL-CIO has endorsed Governor Mills’ reelection bid.
By her words and actions, Governor Mills demonstrates that she is doing what she can to make Maine the best state in the nation in which to work. She knows there is still more to do, especially coming out of the pandemic. This Labor Day, I want a Governor that cares about the Maine workers, and that Governor is Janet Mills. This is one of the many reasons I will vote to reelect Governor Mills in November.
