The history of Damariscove Island at Adult Ed
On Tuesday, May 2 at Boothbay Region Adult Ed, Chip Griffin, co-author of "Coming of Age on Damariscove Island," will give a talk about the pirates, ghosts, and remarkable history of this fascinating island.
Damariscove, one of Maine’s earliest settlement sites, is owned and managed by the Boothbay Region Land Trust. The Abenakis and, later, European fishermen settled and fished there from 1622 to the late 20th century. Damariscove once was a bustling fishing center, one of the population centers in the Maine frontier, with at least 30 vessels and many residents. Later, it was a family-owned farming and fishing community. By the early 1900s, Damariscove became a year-round community as well as home to seasonal fishermen, farmers, coast guardsmen, summer cottagers community and a school with 18 students.
The talk is from 6 to 8 p.m. and the cost is $10. To register, complete the form in the spring brochure or print one at boothbayae.org. Include payment and mail to the address on the form.
