Holy Week services at St. Philip’s
The week preceding Easter is the most important time in the church’s calendar. St. Philip’s Church, 12 Hodge St., Wiscasset, is eager to share any and all of its services during that week, beginning with a 9 a.m. Palm Sunday service on April 14 that honors Jesus’ procession into Jerusalem. Palms were strewn in Jesus’ pathway as he entered, so will be given to the congregation in observance of that event.
On Maunday Thursday, April 18, there will be the commemoration of the Last Supper, with a service at 6 p.m. It is from this pivotal event that the act of Holy Communion springs. The symbolic foot washing will be included, as Jesus washed the feet of his disciples prior to their meal. People are invited to remain in the church hall after the service to meditate and keep watch through the night, as Jesus did in the Garden of Gethsemane prior to his capture and death at the hands of the occupying Romans.
The following night, April 19, at 6 p.m., there will be a Good Friday service in conjunction with the First Congregational Church. Episcopal liturgy commemorates the suffering and death on the cross of Christ on this day. It is a bleak and hopeless time in the narrative, and the service rightly mirrors this mood. All is in darkness and despair as the congregants exit the worship space.
Easter, the joyous day of Jesus’ resurrection, brings two celebrations on the 21st. The first will be a truly special 6 a.m. sunrise service at the Wiscasset waterfront, when the two churches again combine to pay homage, followed by coffee and goodies in the yacht clubhouse. At 9 a.m., the highest holy day in the Christian calendar will be celebrated at St. Philip’s with choir, bells, and horns. All is right with the Christian world once again. Plan to join in for one or all of these important services.
