Kindergartner helps Wiscasset teacher demonstrate classroom
Clover Apczynski, 5, knows what to say about mistakes in Becky Hallowell’s kindergarten class at Wiscasset Elementary School.
“Oh, bummer. Maybe next time,” Apczynski said when Hallowell asked her Nov. 17, in the Wiscasset Middle High School library. Teacher and student were showing the School Committee what kindergarten is like at WES. We all make mistakes — that’s how we learn, they added in the demonstration that looked at the class climate and some of the learning.
With her mother, Sabrina Apczynski, sitting nearby in the front row, the kindergartner showed what Hallowell described as “brag tags” students wear; the tags show the things the student can do. The only time to say can’t is if there’s a yet after it, Hallowell said.
Hallowell also cited the pluses she is seeing for this year’s kindergarten class as a result of the school department’s adding of pre-kindergarten last year. This year’s kindergarten is more prepared for learning than any she’s had in 22 years, she told the committee. Students came in knowing the alphabet, having number sense and being able to write their names.
Hallowell’s class does some of its work outdoors, such as counting acorns and forming shapes or letters with them; and when students are indoors, 10 minutes of sitting calls for yoga moves or other movement. Hallowell said that, as the committee could see with Clover, when they’re 5, students need to move around a lot. With funding Hallowell sought through donorschoose.org, the class now also has seating that moves, including bouncy balls.
At Hallowell’s direction, Apczynski sang a song from class. It ended with, “This class is awesome, amazing and cool.”
Audience member Tom Seekins, there to speak for Siemens about a planned energy project, later commented to the committee about the demonstration. He has a daughter in kindergarten in another town, “and they’re not doing some of those things,” he said.
Committee member Chelsea Haggett smiled and said, “Maybe you should move here.”
