Land transfer left to Woolwich voters
For the first time in 67 years, Woolwich’s historic 1837 Town House will be the setting for a town meeting. Voters will meet at 5 p.m. Monday, June 18 to consider transferring town-owned land to private ownership.
If passed, the two-part question will authorize the select board to negotiate the transfer of the former town landing property off George Wright Road to Matt and Amy Richard of Woolwich.
The land-locked, 1.1-acre parcel abuts Nequasset Brook and includes a small strip of land between a one-lane bridge and the brook. Voters discontinued the bridge and unpaved road at the annual town meeting. The Richards own the property the bridge serves. The town-owned land abuts their property off Barley Neck Road.
Selectmen Dale Chadbourne, Jason Shaw and Chairman David King Sr. signed the town meeting warrant Friday morning, June 8. Selectmen Allen Greene and Allison Hepler were unable to attend.
King said all parties involved were anxious to see the issue resolved. “This starts the process to bring closure to it.”
The property is in a resource protection area as shown on the town’s 2011 zoning map. “Because it’s in shoreland zoning/resource protection, it falls under Limited Residential Development,” Shaw explained to the Wiscasset Newspaper.
“Voters need to understand any future development on this land would be subject to planning board and code enforcement review,” he added. Shaw served 20 years on the planning board.
“We don’t know too much about the property as far as why the town owned it, or what it was used for other than a town landing,” said Shaw.
The select board will have zoning and tax maps on hand. A regular select board meeting will follow the town meeting.
The yellow Town House is at the junction of Old Stage and Dana Mills roads.
King said the last annual town meeting held in it was in 1951. The select board meets there every second Monday in June.
“I’m glad that we occasionally get to still use the building. This past year we had an ADA ramp built for the entrance and since then the Bath Garden Club has added a flower garden and planted a tree on the lawn,” he said.
Road Commissioner Jack Shaw will provide a generator if electricity is needed during the meeting, although King said the board will be finished with its business before nightfall.
